But Winning is Everything

Discussing what happened today in Reliant Stadium will take a certain amount of clear-headed, non-drunken, unexpletive-filled perspective; a kind of perspective we just don’t have right now. So, in order to avoid the inevitable depression induced coma that comes with reliving that 10-23 ass kicking in Houston, we’re turning our attention to something we can actually respect: A team who found a way to win.

Dolphins 7 Eagles 17

So I know what you’re thinking. “Um, it was the freakin’ Dolphins. My grandma could have beat the Dolphins today…and she died 5 years ago.” All true my friend. But it’s not the fact that the Eagles won that impressed us. It’s how they won.

The game was shaping up to be a real IRBDTW (I’d Rather Be Dead Than Watch). When McNabb wasn’t competing with Dolphins QB Josh Beck for “Worst Quarterback Rating of the Year” honors, there were lowlights in the form of a 46 yard Reggie Brown touchdown negated by a holding call and a Dolphins punt return for a touchdown.

Then, just when it looked like things couldn’t unravel for the Eagles anymore, McNabb got hurt. In comes AJ Feely, who conveniently throws an interception in the red zone. It was around that time a lot of folks started wishing CBS would switch to an “already in progress” episode of Two and a Half Men.

Down 7-3, the Eagles had two choices. Option 1: Let an 0-9 team embarrass them in their house (a fate worse than death.) Option 2: Find a way to win. Unlike the Saints last week, they went with Option 2.

Westbrook turned it on Westbrook style, rushing for 148 yards on 32 carries. Feely got the feeling back in his passing arm, completing 13 of 19 passes for 116 yards. And the defense manned up, shutting down the Dolphins at every opportunity. For the second week in a row, the Eagles found a way to win.

Last Sunday, it was against the Redskins, a feat which also came courtesy of the one-man show that is Brian Westbrook. Now they sit at 5-5, with a possible (although unlikely) shot at making it into the playoffs. The Eagles came together as a team, they didn’t panic, and they won the game. Sometimes it’s just that simple.

  1. seems eerily similar to the start of the eagles run last year. mcnabb getting hurt, 5-5.
    could feely pull a garcia?

  2. This season is not helped by the fact that I’ve started to have hot flashes. Real ones. Not the ones induced by too much beer. It reminds me that I am aging. I don’t have that much time left to waste. Don’t my Saints know this?

  3. I think AJ did a great job. He is the perfect guy to back McNabb. He did his job and if he has to play against the Pats that would be fine. He beat them when he was the quaterback for Miami. I think we should just go out there with confidence because no one really expects anyone to beat the Patriots.

  4. for the eagles, the key to beating the pats will be westbrook and the defense. and you’re right alyssa, there’s really no need for any team to fear playing the patriots anymore because it’s almost expected that all of their opponents will get their asses kicked. if anything, i think their streak takes pressure off opponents with nothing to lose.
