Her Shirt Says it All
The Saints are in the final course of a late season bird buffet. First Course: Falcon Fricassée, yummy! Second Course: Cajun Fried Cardinal, delightful! Third Course: Eagle Étouffée with a side dish of Drama Au Gratin. (Uh oh, somebody better grab us a bottle of Tums!)
This Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles return to the Superdome for the third time in two seasons. In 2006, the Saints defeated them in two hardscrabble games by the score of 27-24. While much has changed for both teams since last year’s contests, one thing remains the same. The Eagles once again find themselves faced with rumors and speculations swirling over who will be quarterback come next year.
It’s not so much the elephant in the room, as it is the Bald Eagle in the room. Andy Reid swears that Donovan McNabb is the only man for him. Meanwhile Donovan’s reportedly whispered to Fox reporter, Pam Oliver, that he feels “his days in Philly are numbered and that he sees the organization distancing itself from him.” Donovan now denies saying it. Oliver is sticking to her representation of what McNabb said stating that what she reported is “on-my-mother’s-grave accurate.”
Now that the Eagles have no chance to make the playoffs, the flighty fandom in Philly wants to see what rookie Kevin Kolb can do. Kolb was the Eagles’ second round draft pick and has seen no playing time since pre-season. In response to questions this week from the press about the QB situation, Reid squawked, “I’m SO tired of talking about it. I’ve answered it and answered it and answered it. I mean, I can’t tell you any more than what I already have.” Let’s hope that McNabb stays in Philly. Rumors are swirling that the Falcons want to get their talons on him. The Chicks prefer that McNabb stays out of our division. And let’s hope that the distraction created by this ongoing QB drama works in the Saints’ favor on Sunday.
The only quarterback drama going on with Drew Brees: Which receiver will he go to next? Brees threw to seven different receivers last week in the course of defeating the Cardinals. And over the last four games, Drew is playing better than any quarterback in the league - even Tom Brady. He’s passed for 10 touchdowns, thrown only 1 interception and has had a quarterback rating over 100 in all four contests. There’s no one cooler than our Brees in the pocket right now because he’s making smart decisions, extending plays and avoiding mistakes. Brees is the guy the chattering nabobs on ESPN and elsewhere are pointing to as the main reason that the Saints are still in the playoff hunt and the reason that we have a decent shot to win a few games if we make it into the postseason.
The Saints do have their own little drama playing out this week with the “Will He or Won’t He Play?” saga with Reggie Bush. Some think that Reggie should stay on the bench because Aaron Stecker has been doing so well the last two weeks. Some think that Sean Payton is saying that Reggie may play as a smokescreen to throw off the game planning of the Eagles’ coaching staff. Everyone thinks that Reggie wants to play because he’s a competitor and he wants to do his part to win this crucial game. The Saints coaches and trainers need to think about the wisdom of rushing Reggie back on the playing field and potentially worsening his injury. This drama will continue until Sunday because the decision on whether or not he will play has been deemed a “game time decision.”
Oh yes my friends, be sure to pack your Pepto on Sunday. This final course of the Bird Buffet guarantees to be a doozy. While the Eagle meat might be tough, we’re confident it will go down smoothly. Then, we get to feast on a dish that’s best served cold: revenge against those Pooh Bears in the Windy City.
