Trading Spaces: Free Agency Day 1

The Saints did what we hoped they’d do in the first day of free agency by signing a defensive player; it just wasn’t the one we expected him to sign.  The team snagged NY Jets Lineman Jonathan Vilma in exchange for a draft pick.  He’ll join the likes of Scott Fujita, Mark Simoneau, and Scott Shanle to beef up the Saints front four.

Sure you haven’t heard his name before, but that doesn’t mean Vilma isn’t worthy of a spot on our roster.  He led the NFL in tackles in 2005 and earned a Pro Bowl spot in his sophomore year.  He pretty much rotted bench after the Jets switched to a 3-4 defense in 2006 then suffered a knee injury in 2007.

So will he be healthy in time for the start of this season?  Here’s what Jonathan posted on his official website last week:

“My knee is doing fine, and it progressing very well. I’m pleased with the progress I have made, and I have every intention of being on the field…”

As for his new life with the Saints….

“I can’t tell you how excited and pleased I am to be a member of the Saints. That they went out and traded for me makes me feel wanted and I think I will fit right in to that 4-3 defense.   It’s great to be in this position. My next move is to meet all the guys and really start to learn the defense. I can’t wait to get it going.”

Neither can we Jonathan, neither can we.

In obnoxious news, A$ante Samuel is flying his pricey Patriot ass to the Eagles.  $amuel signed on for a 6-year, $9.5 million per season deal.  The Eagles are also reportedly close to making a deal with Oakland free-agent defensive end Chris Clemons.

For the latest in free agency news, don’t ask us.  We only care about the Saints.  But it appears NFL.com is bothering itself with a host of unimportant teams.  Enjoy!

We’d be much better off to sign Lance Briggs too, cut Shanle and Simoneau, and have Fujita, Vilma and Briggs start at linebacker. I don’t think there’s been a single LB in NFL history that has done as much or less than Simoneau and Shanle. They don’t belong in the NFL. They’d be lucky to make it in the AFL.
