Money Talks or BCS Walks…

BCS Commissioners a.k.a. the money-grubbing whores who make the decisions in college football, have rejected a proposal for a four game playoff system, thereby guaranteeing Ohio State will have another opportunity to get its ass whooped in prime time.  The decision was made as the whores prepare to renegotiate television contracts for Bowl games.

Under the proposal, the top four ranked teams would take part in two semifinal games.  The winners of those games would then play for the national title.  But the commissioners say they think a playoff system in college football would be complicated and yucky (see: less profitable) so they’ve opted to stick with the current format.  The biggest resistance came from the big dopes in the Big 12.  Shocking.

But what do you think.   Does the current BCS system boil down to little more than a Big Crappy Suckfest or do you think a playoff system would eliminate the competitive nature of college football?  Go ahead, let it out…

  1. HAHA! Yeah, a tournament would definitely ruin the competitive nature of college football.
I mean, have you seen how the basketball players mail it in every March?

And I can see what they mean about a tourny being complicated. Nothing brings me more pleasure than the precise scientific beauty of a ranking system that keeps Auburn out of the title game only to watch some crappy, oversized midwest team get the tar beat out’em by USC.

The solution? Thunderdome. Tina Turner hosts a primetime event where the top 25 teams do battle to the death in one giant stadium, until the last man standing, even if it’s the assistant to the assistant offensive coordinator, is crowned national champion. The Chick-Fil-A Thunderdome Bowl.

Talking Heads reunion for halftime show.

  2. Hell. I am all for letting the SEC continue to beat up on pussy teams. Seriously, is anything more fun than that?

  3. bravo once again monty. i mean seriously, a tina turner and the thunderdome reference? wow. are you single?
@seester: while i do enjoy whoopin that ass, it would be nice to eliminate all the whining and at least whoop the ass of a worthy opponent

  4. Oh my. Even *I* don’t use that word, seester. :P You’ve made me blush. Daaaaaamn.

I can appreciate both sides of the issue, and as a result, I’m not strongly committed to either point of view. I don’t have too much of a problem with the way it’s set up now, as long as 1 and 2 settle it on the field.

Now I certainly appreciate the whole beauty pageant aspect of what determines who 1 and 2 are, too. Valid point, and it can be annoying *cough*USC*cough* but I can only muster a serious problem with it when an unbeaten gets left out, and that’s not often. Auburn got jobbed, no question about it. And that was a shame. But I just think it will prove EXTREMELY rare for there to be 3 or more BCS unbeatens, or that an unbeaten BCS team will get left out in favor of anyone with a loss. In fact, I’m not sure either will ever happen again.

And if you’ve got a loss, any loss, and you’re left out in favor of two other teams with one loss, then in my opinion you’ve got no basis to bitch. You shouldn’t have lost. Simple as that. And I’m on record as having been of that opinion with regard to LSU both times as well, before they got in. And I would be again. Don’t lose and you won’t be in that position. (Hawaii doesn’t count.)

Based on the above, I do believe there’s merit to the point that the whole season is one big tournament, and that part of it appeals to me. I’d hate to lose that unique quality of college football.

On the other hand, far be it from me to object to additional college football. If they wanted the eventual champ to play 19 or 20 games like in the NFL, I certainly wouldn’t complain.

The whole thing about protecting the student-athletes and not interfering with their studies and all that mumbo jumbo is complete bullshit, of course, and it insults our intelligence for them to even still be trying to pass that foolishness off as truth.

But I believe them 100% when they say it would hurt the bowls. And the only reason I believe them is because of course it all comes back to money. Surely they’ve explored it up one side and down the other, and they know exactly how much money stands to be gained or lost. If there were money to be gained, they’d have already made the change. They’re not going to leave millions on the table, and then lie about it on top of that.

I’m not going to pretend to understand *why* a playoff would be less lucrative. All I know is that if they say it would be, you can bet they know what they’re talking about and they’re telling the truth. Otherwise there would already be a playoff.

If it were completely up to me to decide, I think I’d go with the plus-1 “de facto 4 team tournament” option. That seems like the best compromise. But it’s fine with me if they leave it as-is indefinitely.

The real issue for as long as they leave it this way is minimizing the subjectivity of the poll system. The “coaches” ought to be completely removed from it. The formula should be weighted HEAVILY to the computer polls. I’d say 70/30. The algorithms may not be perfect, but at least they’re the same for everybody, every week. And they should add about 20 more computer polls with varying algorithms.

The media poll should be 100% public, and there should be some kind of threshold for dropping ballots that are just ridiculous, as well as some kind of threshold for removing the eligibility of voters who consistently submit ridiculous ballots. I’m not sure how they’d do that, but surely there’s a way. And finally, polls are for entertainment purposes only until midseason.

  5. I wasn’t surprised that it got voted down. Monty said it quite well - it certainly wouldn’t kill the competitiveness!

  6. Damn GW….you REALLY let it out! I knew I could count on you! ;)
Furthermore, I’d have to agree with you that the Coaches shouldn’t have jack to do with the whole polling system. I think the computer polls and strength of schedule should have a significant impact on the rankings. And i also agree that their should be an option to drop stupid media votes.
