Shockey-ing News!

The Saints and the bad boy of the big apple are playing let’s make a deal!  According to FOXSPORTS, the Giants have agreed to trade Jeremy Shockey to the Saints for a 2nd and 5th round pick.   All that’s left is for Shockey to pass a physical and for the league to approve the deal.

Does anyone know how to feel about this?  Could his personality wreck the team chemistry or bring a desperately needed fire back to the offense?  I’m scared and confused.  Will someone hold me? Perhaps you Monty Beaver, since you tipped us off?!  They didn’t give up a lot to get him, so that’s got to be good, right??? I haven’t been this perplexed since someone told me Jeff Garcia was married…and not to a dude.

Well hell, it’s a done deal, so the only choice we have is to feel good about it, right?

I don’t know if I’d say they didn’t give up a lot to get him… in fact that’s my main concern. They already had a pick tied up in Vilma, and they traded a 6th to draft Arrington. Now a 2nd and a 5th and all of a sudden next April we’re looking at Ricky Williams Draft II: Electric Boogaloo.

I think the “attitude” thing is overblown on both sides of the issue. I don’t think he’ll be a problem, nor do I think he’ll be a “spark plug” just by virtue of his mouth. That being said, I do believe that Drew and Coach Payton will keep him very happy re: giving him the damn ball. And a happy player is always a good thing.

Pro: He’s a damn fine TE who ought to do really well in the Saints offense.
Con: I’m still of the opinion that the baseline at the TE position, and certainly on offense in general, wasn’t all that low in the first place.
Pro: He’s in the prime of his career, and just like it was with McKenzie, the Saints have “saved” him from a situation he didn’t like. He’ll go balls out for the Saints, I’m sure.
Con: What might a 2nd and a 5th have bought in the way of a corner or weakside linebacker instead?
Pro: Holy crap is the offense going to be fun to watch this year.

I do think you’ve got to be happy that the Saints are making these moves for guys who are in the primes of their careers. That in and of itself is better than we’re used to. And you’ve gotta love the balls-out “We’re going for it, by golly!” attitude on the part of the administration.

Bottom line is that if you still think Sean Payton knows how to orchestrate a killer offense, you should be optimistic about this. They gave at the office re: the defense this spring, so it’s not like they’ve neglected that side of the ball.

I’ve always been a “take it or leave it” guy re: Shockey, but now that they’ve done it, I’ll take it.

  2. Well, we got him without having to give up what the Giants apparently wanted for him so they blinked and Loomis didn’t. Good set up for a win-win. There are some teams who just could not afford to have one more “character” without imploding. That’s not the Saints. I think they needed some “spicing” up and Sean Payton knows him better than we do so I think it’s going to be all right.

  3. good breakdown wang. after much thought (and a few mild sedatives) i found myself feeling pretty confident about the deal. And I gotta agree with Madmarsha that his spicy nature will likely do more to benefit the team than set us back. My only true request of Shockey at this point is that he wash his hair. Other than that, we’re cool.

  4. Sugar, it’s nice of you to give me credit. I’m blushin.

Just like everyone else, my mind has been waffling about this thing all day, through work, and now it’s 3 in the morning and I’m trying to put coherent thoughts about it onto the internets. Tall order.

Because to say this is high-risk, high-reward is dry humping the tip of the iceberg. I like what Wang had to say (feel like I’m in 16 Candles right now). You’d like to think that Payton knows what he’s doing, because I like his track record so far on acquisitions (at least as far as personality and character. We’ll not mention cornerbacks who’s names end in D).

So really, the burning question for me is whether Shockey knows that his personality is something of a liability. Hrm. That’s a question that goes a lot deeper than football, because it’s something that most people struggle with. Really, let’s say that he is as volatile as we’ve been led to believe (I also think this may be overblown). That means that this is really the first character experiment under Payton. The thing about that is, this isn’t the Patriots, is it? Coach P’s regime hasn’t established its success consistently enough to expect players of the Randy Moss ilk to come in and Get In Line, has it? That’s what I’ve found myself wondering about.

On the other hand, it’s no secret that Payton loves tight ends. I don’t think this puts Campbell’s job at risk (run blocking fanatic), but either Miller or Johnson are off the final roster I would think. Does that make camp more competitive? Absolutely. Does it make the offense more scary? Oh, sweet baby Jesus, yes.

And what really comforts me, and what I’ll wrap you up in for bedtime Nola, is this thought: You’re Brian Urlacher, it’s December, and you’re playing the Saints. Should be another win, right? But they’re running a split backfield with Bush and Deuce, lining up Shockey at TE and a split receiver set. What’s going on? In a pinch they can spread the run like room temperature butter, and open up some holes. But Brian, they’ve also got 5 legit receivers on the field without giving up any blocking! What are you supposed to do with this!?!? WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO?!?!?!?!?!?! Oh shit, the ball already snapped, and here you are with your thumb where it shouldn’t be.

Dammit, they threw it deep to Henderson. Touchdown. It’s okay, Sexy Rexy will get it back.

  5. too freakin hilarious! i’d like this scenario to be played out as an snl skit with tracy morgan as reggie bush, the other black dude as deuce, horatio sanz as shockey and will ferrell as a terrified brian urlacher.

  6. Yeah, Other Black Dude is one of my all time favorite actors.

  7. i still think he got robbed at last year’s oscars…but what do i know…
