Politics and Pigskin

Attention all Obama supporters: congratulations! Last night’s Redskins loss almost assures the Illinois Senator’s victory. You see as history would have it, the Redskins success or failure in its last home game has predicted the next president in every election cycle since 1936…with the exception of 2004.

According to ancient folklore (also known as NPR), when the Redskins win their last home game, the incumbent party wins the election. When the Redskins lose, as they did last night, the opposing party captures the victory. But don’t just take my word for it…

Meanwhile, you may (but likely won’t) be surprised to hear which current and former NFL players are supporting which presidential candidates. Many players have been tight-lipped this election season and others were told by their coach (that means you Romeo Crennel) to keep their mouths shut. Still, others couldn’t help but spill the beans on who’ll they’ll be voting for on election day.

McCain Supporters:
John Elway, Former Denver QB
Troy Aikman, Former Dallas QB
Brady Quinn, Browns QB
Mike Alstott-Tampa Bay FB
Jeff Feagles-New York Giants Punter
Ethan Albright, Redskins Center

Obama Supporters:
Reggie Bush, Saints RB
Willie McGinest, Browns LB
Alge Crumpler, Titans TE
Trent Edwards, Bills QB
Earnest Graham, Tampa Bay TB
Chad Johnson, Bengals WR (Who apparently cooked up some elaborate scheme to reveal his endorsement…)

While players like Eagles running back Brian Westbrook admit excitement over the possibility of America’s first black president, for a lot of players, the issue hasn’t been so much black and white, but green. As I’m sure you know, NFL players make millions of dollars and would take a tax hit if Obama were elected and rolled back the Bush tax cuts. The move would make it nearly impossible for the athletes to afford their 5th Hummer with diamond studded rims and matching, 10K, blinged out earrings. Would a sad day in America that would be…

Even those players who won’t come clean about their vote publicly can’t help but get caught up in the election excitement. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Saints linebacker Scott Fujita opened my eyes to what may be behind some of the team’s defensive problems so far this season.

“We spend an hour a day talking about this exact subject — in meetings, on the plane, in the locker room.”

Hmmm…how bout we just stick to the play book. Thanks.

Finally, for those of you who have yet to vote…get to the polls silly! For those of you who are still undecided, ever wish you had never been born? Yeah…you’re not alone in that wish.

I think your first sentence should say “last night redskins’ loss”… not “win”.

you can delete my comment after, not trying to put you on blast.

So, we should be sending thank you cards and gift baskets to Green Bay then?

It seems like something is missing, no?
