How do we feel about this whole “Dan Morgan” thing? Oh wait, are you out of the loop? Well in case you haven’t heard, ole Danny boy has decided to come out of retirement and sign with the Saints. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Morgan is the same former Panthers’ linebacker who signed with the Saints last year, only to retire before regular season. I don’t know about you, but this feels like a case of loving a butterfly, setting it free, having it come back to you, and then realizing you didn’t want a damn pet butterfly to begin with.
There is the upside that Morgan could add depth to the linebacker position. But there’s also the elephant in the room, also known as the multitude of concussions and injuries he’s endured since his rookie year. Morgan broke his leg back in 2001 and has since suffered 5 (known) concussions and other injuries. Before the 2008 season, he cited those injuries as the motivation for his retirement at the age of 31.
But Morgan says that year off made him realize his time in the league isn’t over. And now he’s filed reinstatement papers with the NFL. Perhaps he didn’t read the study released today by the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE), which shows a direct link between concussions and severe brain damage. The study is complicated and science-y, so you can read all about it here. Here’s the gist: concussions are scary and too many can lead to major problems down the line.
So should I really feel right about sacrificing Dan Morgan’s brain just because he doesn’t give a crap if he’s a vegetable by age 40? I dunno. I will say that if someone can guarantee us it’ll lead to a Super Bowl win, I can certainly look the other way.
