Just Another Day at the White House

steele0522_330So the Steelers went to see President Obama last Thursday. Obama thought, Hey, the Steelers are comin’ into town, may as well put them to work; it’s not every day I’ll be able to have these buff, young, studly football players who I can boss around and make ‘em do stuff. Of course, I’m only imagining that this was his thought process, but I thought it was a great idea nonetheless.

Among Pennsylvanian senators and wounded veterans (and even Mean Joe Greene), the Steelers helped put together 3,000 care packages that will be sent to troops overseas.

Pretty cool.

Polamalu couldn’t have said it better. From the Post-Gazette: “It’s an honor to be around real warriors, the President, and the White House.”

The weather couldn’t have been nicer, and the Steelers were relaxed wearing white golf shirts instead of suits (which they typically wear). They presented President Obama with a #44 jersey, in honor of becoming the 44th president. The ceremony was broadcast live in Pittsburgh; seeing as I live in New York City, I unfortunately had to miss it. But it’s always interesting when two different worlds, like sports and politics, collide. And it’s always nice when the president is rooting for your favorite team during the Super Bowl.

The Tribune-Review quoted Obama saying, “When I started playing, I started paying attention to football, it was guys like Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris and the Steel Curtain and Mean Joe Greene…I became a Steelers fan.” Hard to argue with that logic.

So it looked like the team, Obama, and everyone else who went had a great time. Way to represent, Steelers. Coach Tomlin also said a lot of them were heading back to Pittsburgh to watch the Penguins playoff game later that night. Glad to see that they support each other…you know, when they’re good. Not sure how many Steelers players would announce that they’re going to go to a Pirates game later that day…
