Cats Look to Camp; Stay Out of Spotlight

Ardrey Kell CampThere haven’t been any arrests, hook ups, break ups or jail releases to shake up the Queen City football scene, but that doesn’t mean the Carolina Panthers are sitting quietly.

In the weeks leading up to camp, the cats are looking to establish their dominance. The stories to watch coming out of Spartanburg run the gamut from Delhomme to Peppers to Vick. Check it out.

- Quarterback Jake Delhomme finished last season in the middle of the QB pack, as per usual; however, he ended the season on a low note, responsible for 6 turnovers in the Panthers crushing playoff loss to the Cardinals. Can he rebound? And at 34, how much longer does he have as a starter?

- With questions about Delhomme lingering, is the stage set for Michael Vick to waltz onto the Panthers’ lineup as the league’s best backup? Team sources say no, but fans aren’t ruling out the possibility. Considering that the merry-go-round of cat QBs have featured Delhomme, Chris Weinke, David Carr, and Vinny Testaverde, I’d say it’s not too far fetched.

- Puttin’ in the work: many players are so dedicated to seeing a trip to the most super of bowls this season, that they’ve been doing additional conditioning at local high schools. DeAngelo Williams, Chris Harris and others aren’t afraid of the Southern heat and are using the extra time to increase agility, strength and speed.

- Offseason drama has centered on Julius Peppers. Will lingering tension affect his chemistry with the teammates? His work ethic? His productiveness at camp? Will McDreamy and Meredith finally get together??? Too many questions, so little time.

It’s in Julius’ best interest to have a good year. I was one calling for him to bounce, but since he’s still here, he better make the best of it.

Mike Vick a Panther? The world couldn’t be so sweet! I’ve always got Delhomme’s back, but he is the epitome of ‘cardic cat’. He’s good one game, bad the next is wearing thin. Put Vick in there as his back up, and all will be right with the world. However, I don’t see that happening because the fan backlash would be terrible.
