Colts Titans FootballSo the Titans lost to the Colts (awesome!), their most heated division rival (great!), on national T.V. (sweet!), by the largest margin of the season (fantastic!), and are now 0-5 (wonderful!).

Not even my time-tested method of using sarcasm to mask my embarrassing, if not legitimate, sadness is working here! This is disaster and we’re not even to the bye week yet.

After a very momentous few weeks in my life (new job, new town, new age!) I was really hoping that I could make my return to Chicks in the Huddle with a positive, upbeat post. But NOOOOOO. Tennessee had to turn in their worst performance of the season.

It’s bad enough to watch Peyton Manning have an amazing start to the year (although, he is my top performing fantasy player… I’m so torn!!), but when his most praise-worthy game of the season comes against the Titans, it’s pretty much torture.

I don’t even know what to say about Tennessee’s performance Sunday night. Their epic demise has really stumped me. Aside from the loss of Albert Haynesworth, the team looks good on paper. Their receiving core seemed promising and Chris Johnson is (or was, as of last week) the NFL’s leading rusher.

Here are what I see as the three glaring weaknesses of the team –

1) Kerry Collins – Yes, he led the team to a league-high 13-3 last season. But that was last season. Now, he’s commandeering the Titans to a league-worst record. Between the inaccuracy and the interceptions, K-Coll gets an emphatic downgrade.

2) The secondary – Having the worst pass defense in the league is straight-up embarrassing. Now, with Cortland Finnigan injured and Nick Harper out for six weeks with a broken arm, the Titans are stuck with rookies who haven’t really proved anything yet. What happened to the Pro-Bowl caliber play of last season??

3) Special teams – Though it wasn’t as big of an issue against the Colts, the punt and kick return teams have really struggled this season. Nothing kills momentum faster than a fumble by your punt returner – especially when it leads to a touchdown for the other team.

I’m not going to pretend like the Titans have a shot at the playoffs anymore (with they way they’re playing, I’m not even going to pretend they have a shot of winning against the Patriots next week). I just hope at some point in the season Tennessee is able to gain some of their magic from last season back.

During the pre-season win against Green Bay, a friend of mine (who happens to be a Packers fan) sent me a text message that said, “Good thing the Titans’ 4th stringers look solid. Tell me how that’s going when the Packers are in the Super Bowl and Kerry Collins led the team to a solid 8-8.”

At the time, I scoffed at the thought. Now…?

I would celebrate an 8-8 season.

I feel your pain, though I think 8-8 sounds pretty good. (It’s all relative.) Should be interesting to see how Vince Young does if they start playing him soon.
    Oh, and happy birthday!
