Nobody likes change. Sure, sometimes the end result can be a wonderfully glorious thing, but with change always comes a little bit of sadness as you usher out the old and welcome in the new.
I know Aaron Rodgers has been the Packers QB for two years now, but this Sunday, Packer fans across the world will have to wrap their head around something entirely different and not a little bit painful: Our beloved No. 4–the man we’ve cherished for 16 years and revered as a football god– will play on the hallowed Lambeau Field–the frozen tundra where he brought hundreds of thousands of fans to tears with his boyish charm and killer right arm–in a purple Vikings jersey.
Yes, that’s right, Brett Favre will be coming to Lambeau Field to defeat the Green Bay Packers.
This is the kind of change that really no one likes.
I’ve always been an emotional girl. Call it what you want, I suppose the term drama queen comes to mind, but I’ve embraced the fact that I wear my heart on my sleeve and oftentimes get caught up in the moment. It’s all part of my je ne sais quoi if you will.
Therefore, you can only imagine the torrent of emotions that I’m overwhelmingly battling this week in preparation for the big game.
Confused. Sad. Excited. Nervous. Anxious. It’s like I’m 16 again and about to face my ex for the first time in the school hallway. Do I laugh? Do I cry? When I see him, what will it be like? I truthfully don’t know the answers to any of these lingering questions, but I do know one thing… This Sunday is going to be damn difficult to swallow.
Yes, I want the Packers to win. Any opposing quarterback coming into my house at Lambeau Field should not and will not be encouraged. That being said, how do I turn my back on a 16-year love affair that comprised the majority of my youth.
Brett Favre became QB when I was nine years old. I was watching Number Four long before cell phones were a common necessity. To give you some perspective, he came on the scene about the same time as the World Wide Web. In terms of football, a tenure like his is unheard of. The Bears have changed their starting quarterback 42 times since 1992..and I had one. America followed three different Presidents of the United States, all while Wisconsites supported only one leader.
So now as this former leader returns to the place he once called home to play against the team that ultimately made him a household name, all we can do is hope for an amicable reception.. a few interceptions.. and a speedy departure.
I will never dispute that what Brett Favre ultimately did to his fans in Green Bay can be conceived by many as traitorous. Heck, I still most commonly refer to him as Judas, and I will readily jump to defend Aaron Rodgers seven days a week. But in the spirit of moving on, you can’t deny that this game will be a momentous, albeit emotionally challenging, game.
In terms of skill it will be one hell of a battle. The Packers have been on a roll since their loss to our purple frenemies to the West at the start of the month, and every player will come to this game with 100 percent heart and dedication. The Packers are ready for Sunday. They’ve been ready since the day Brett Favre asked to be released. The advantage is ours to relinquish. The offensive line will need to give their every ounce of strength to stop players like Jared Allen from touching our QB, and on the defense, Adrian Peterson, as well as Brett’s desire for revenge, will always be a lingering threat.
But the team knows what they need to do. And they’ll do it. They’ll do it for themselves. They’ll do it for Packer fans everywhere. And they’ll do it for our Wisconsin pride.
I don’t know what to expect this Sunday when I see my old QB take the field. I may silently cheer. I may sneer. I could even shed a tear.
But I do know one thing: The Green Bay Packers are going to win this football game.

BRAVO EMILY!
Love,
Your mom’s old friend who has lived in MN. for 40 years and still cheers for the Packers….it is a real dilemna!
Haven’t felt that much electricity in the stadium since the
Favre/Reggie White playoff games. Favre still brings it on!
He will take the Vikings to the Super Bowl THEN retire.
And won’t the Favre fans be grinning then……I know I will.
I was really pulling for you guys.
I really wanted the Pack to win this one. In part because it will help my Bears win the division title…but in part bc Favre is just old and gross
