It’s been a while since any Tennessee Titan (with the exception of the NFL’s leading rusher Chris Johnson!) has done anything Hit It-worthy, so I’m especially excited for Tuesday this week.
Hit it: O-Line! This week, the offensive linemen gave V.Y. great protection – he was accurate, he ran for 32 yards, and most importantly, he wasn’t sacked or forced into throwing a dumb interception. The group helped Vince get some confidence (thank goodness) so he could lead the team to victory. They also blocked for Chris Johnson (who is also obviously Hit It-worthy) as he ran for a monster game.
Quit it: Run defense? The run defense has been one of the only reliably decent aspects of the Titans since the beginning of this abomination called the 2009 season, so it’s curious that they had such a poor performance during Tennessee’s first win. The defensive line put pressure on David Garrard while the secondary picked him off twice and kept Jacksonville’s WRs in check, but the whole defense let Maurice Jones-Drew run all over them. Two 75+ yard touchdowns? Unacceptable. Let’s keep the big running plays on our side of the scoreboard, sound good boys?
Hit it: Cortland Finnegan/Michael Griffin! After having Pro-Bowl seasons in 2008, both Finnegan and Griffin have yet to show up this year. Both chose this game as the chance to prove that the Titans defense still has some spark. Finnegan sealed the Titans’ victory in the fourth quarter by intercepting a deep pass from Garrard. Griffin forced a fumble and blocked a potential game-tying extra point. Keep up the hustle, gentlemen!
Quit it: Smash and Dash! I think the C.J./Lendale White combo was cute last year, but now that Johnson has proven himself as an elite back, White hasn’t been as necessary. It’s hard to have a goal line RB when your speed guy breaks off huge TD runs. White is still having a decent season, but I wouldn’t start him in any fantasy league (though I’m sure those who drafted him have already come to that conclusion – after wasting a high draft pick and cursing C.J.’s 824-yard season).
Hit it: Brett Kern! After so many seasons of having reliable Craig Hentrich punting the ball away, sometimes it’s hard to think of punting as anything but automatic. Since he’s been hurt, the Titans haven’t had that luxury. Brett Kern played his first game as a Titan this week and showed that he can be a great member of the special teams. According to Jeff Fisher, Kern joined the team mid-week, leaving his wife and newborn baby in 27 inches of Denver snow to play Jacksonville. Even with the elements working against him, he still managed to average 40+ yards with no returns. You can stick around, Brett!
Quit it: Chatter about Jeff Fisher getting fired! Normally I love hearing the sports media gossip about which head coach is on his way out, but when my fearless leader is added to the mix, it is completely unacceptable. Yes, this season has been utterly embarrassing so far. But it would be a ridiculously misguided idea to fire Fisher based on six games. He is the longest-tenured active coach in the league for a reason. Coaches are ultimately responsible for the success and failure of their teams, but Tennessee would be in a much more precarious position if not for Jeff Fisher. So quit it already, sports blogosphere. I think that most teams secretly want him to be fired so their team could snatch him up!
