Saints vs. Patriots: The Passing of the Torch

dome lightningA quarterback with a perfect passer rating, an undefeated season in the making and an oppressive defense to boot…oh no, I’m not talking about the Patriots in 2007. This is the tale of the 2009 New Orleans Saints. On a national stage, in front of a high octane home crowd, the boys in black and gold in grand fashion let it be known that there’s no need to prove they’re the best in the league. The New Orleans Saints are in a league of their own.

Against one of the elite organizations in the NFL, the Saints delivered what could only be described as a certified, bona fide, ass kicking. Our scarfaced warrior Drew Brees put on a simply stunning performance…and that’s objectively speaking. He had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 against the evil genius Bill Belichick. If the numbers don’t tell the whole story (5 Tds, 371 yards) then how bout the big bear hug old Darth Vader gave Drew after the game? (Now let’s just hope he wasn’t secretly planting a mind control chip on #9.)

While Drew took care of business on offense, a bunch of “old dudes” were wreaking havoc for the Saints on defense. Mike McKenzie, yeah, you know that dude who just last week was watching the Saints play from his recliner before watching an Entourage marathon? Well, that dude caught a momentum changing interception and played with a “Vince Young-esque” born again mentality against a talented Patriots offense. And what about Darren Sharper, you know, that sexy piece of…I mean, er, that former Pro Bowl safety who’s been in the league 13 seasons? Well, he pulled off his 7th pick of the year against one of the best quarterbacks in the league. In a magical season, these things happen.

I could go on about how pitiful we made the Patriots look, but this night wasn’t about the Patriots. The sun has set on their time in the spotlight. Monday night was about the Saints and their talent, their weapons, their poise, and their march to greatness. There’s been much talk about the team needing a “statement game” to prove their worth as a championship contender. A Saints victory against the Pats, no “4th & 2″ required, pretty much says it all in my book.

That game was unbelievable! Talk about a trouncing! (Though a little less exciting than I was hoping from a viewing standpoint. Haha.)
    Now I don’t feel as bad about 38-7. :)
    Congrats!!!

The best part was when the Patriots just gave up with 5 minutes left and benched the starters including Brady. That photo of him and Belichick dumbfounded as they look at the scoreboard was priceless!!!!

Congrats to the (by far) better team last night. We looked good at the beginning, but after Brady’s INT… and I’m wondering if the search party ever found the defense since they didn’t show up to the game. The Saints looked like champs last night, the Patriots… not so much.

At the game last night, I had the chills the whole time- and not because I was cold- but because the energy was SO ELECTRIC from the start of the game. I love Drew Brees already, but damn if I don’t love him more and more with every game. What makes me so proud of them is how much they are playing as a TEAM and how good a bunch of guys they are.

I am so proud to be a steadfast fan and to be a season ticket holder. I never thought in my wildest dreams we would be 11-0!

    Who Dat! Go Saints!
