Ah the Jets…so close to greatness and yet again so far. They’re making some pretty decent deals in spite of some hand tying because of this uncapped year.
First off, shoring up the oft charted territory opposite Revis Island. The Jets let Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland go, and traded a 2011 third round draft pick (that could escalate to a second round pick if he plays well) to gain the services of Antonio Cromartie from the San Diego Chargers.
He had 33 tackles and 3 picks last season with the Chargers, and at 25 years old has a great upside.
Judging from the conference call Cromartie had with the media yesterday, his attitude is perfect and he plans to get out there and do his level best for Gang Green.
Outside of his questionable parenting (he supposedly has a boatload of kids and baby mamas) practices, spelling and grammar (check him out on twitter @A_Cromartie31) he is a definite step up, and instantly makes a great secondary even better. Should be fun to watch.
The Jets have also (sadly) allowed Thomas Jones to become a free agent, with the rumored goal of re-signing him without having to pay the roster bonuses he’s owed for the upcoming season.
I don’t like this for one reason. What if it pisses him off and he decides to just go somewhere else? Even at the age of 31 he is still very productive, and was the most productive member of the leagues number one rushing offense. Lets hope this works out. Seriously.
They also signed two former Cowboys-OT Michael Turkovich and K Nick Folk. The Folk signing is definitely insurance in case Jay Feeley decides to leave in free agency. Turkovich will be coming off injury so it will be interesting to see how he plays.
They also put first and third round tenders on Butterfingers Braylon Edwards who is a restricted free agent. Since this is the highest possible tender, he will most likely remain with the Jets. Leon Washington and Brad Smith also had second round tenders placed on them, and there were several original round tenders placed on Kellen Clemens, Eric Smith, Wayne Hunter and Drew Coleman. They also have the right of first refusal for James Idhegbo.
So far so good. This whole first four/final eight uncapped year thing is going to keep the Jets pretty quiet on the UFA front, but hopefully they can get some more things done in spite of it.
There’s only six months left!
