Shots Heard ‘Round the League

In news of the odd and absurd…

  • Jacksonville receiver Kassim Osgood leapt out a second-floor window to escape a gun-wielding man who attacked him and a 19-year-old Jaguars cheerleader, according to police. The armed intruder exchanged gunfire with his ex-girlfriend, Mackenzie Rae Putnal, after putting a gun to her head Monday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Putnal escaped, running downstairs in her parent’s home and grabbing a gun. They both missed. According to the sheriff’s report, Osgood, 30, sustained some minor bruises during the attack and while fleeing. The Florida Times-Union first reported the incident. Julian Armond Bartletto, 20, of Jacksonville, was arrested at his home on charges of aggravated battery, false imprisonment, armed robbery, burglary and violation of an injunction. He was being held without bond at the Duval County Jail. SIDENOTE- The Jaguars have a rule forbidding cheerleaders to date players. Ummm Oops.
  • Titans: Tennessee quarterback Vince Young isn’t saying if he missed meetings before his first career start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 19, and he also refuses to say if he thinks that’s why coach Jeff Fisher benched him late in that loss. He said questions should be directed to coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher told reporters in Denver on a conference call that what happened that week against Pittsburgh is behind the Titans now. Tennessee plays the Broncos this week. Cornerback Jason McCourty will miss at least Sunday’s game against Denver while he recovers from surgery on his broken right forearm.
  • Cowboys: Dez Bryant made national news in training camp when he refused to carry Roy Williams’ pads after practice — bucking the trend of veteran NFL players hazing rookies. Bryant later said he didn’t know about such tradition. Williams excused it, saying then that Bryant would just have to take the team out to dinner and get him some new shoes. Well, that dinner happened Monday night. The final tab: $54,896. Bryant took the offensive players out to Pappas Bros. Steakhouse. Williams, however, made sure Bryant got the message, inviting defensive players as well. And guess who was left holding the bill afterward. Note to Dez- it’s cheaper to carry the shoes hun.
  • Panthers: Wide receiver Steve Smith tried to diffuse any potential controversy between he and rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen, saying his sideline comments to Clausen in Carolina’s 20-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday have been overblown by the media. Sure…
  • Saints: Saints quarterback Drew Brees says he’s wearing a brace on his left knee but is not having any trouble practicing. Meanwhile, safety Roman Harper sat out practice with a hamstring injury and running back Pierre Thomas sat out with a left ankle injury.
  • Ravens: Running back Ray Rice did not practice because of a bruised right knee, leaving open the possibility that Willis McGahee will start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
  • Bills: Eight-year veteran Chris Kelsay, a converted linebacker, revealed that he signed a four-year contract extension Tuesday worth about $24 million.
  • Rams: Coach Steve Spagnuolo said running back Steven Jackson is day to day with a groin strain and that the team would not try to push his return.
  • Cardinals: Receiver Steve Breaston will miss at least one game after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
  • Lions: Shaun Hill will start his third straight game at quarterback Sunday against the Green Bay Packers in place of injured starter Matthew Stafford, coach Jim Schwartz said.
  • Browns: Quarterback Jake Delhomme tested his injured ankle by throwing passes to trainers inside the team’s indoor field house with the possibility of returning to practice today and Friday.

    1. Hi there just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same outcome.
