This Super Bowl Sunday, millions of Americans will find themselves in front of their TVs taking part in one of our country’s favorite pasttimes: watching people do it. That’s right: balls, sweat and butt slaps won’t just take center stage at Cowboys Stadium when the Packers and Steelers face off. Some current and former NFL players are plain old fed up with all the “eXXXtra” influence the porn industry has on our society. So, they’re teaming up with churches and ministers across the country for a creepily titled event called “National Porn Sunday”.
National Porn Sunday will be observed on February 6th, the same day as the Super Bowl. It’s an effort by a web network called XXXchurch to reach out (not reach around) to those who are struggling with porn and sexual addictions. According to creator Craig Gross (let’s just ignore the obvious name related cheap shots), “porn industry revenue is larger than the revenues of the professional football, baseball or basketball leagues in this country.”
The goal of National Porn Sunday is to get churches talking about what the group calls “The Elephant in the Pew.” NFL players have been enlisted to help get the message out by sharing personal stories and taking part in a 40 minute videotaped message. Participating players include Seahawks QB Matt Hassleback, Jon Kitna of the Cowboys, and former QB Josh McCown. The video will be shown at a National Porn Sunday service going on in Dallas, along with other participating churches.
