Call it a publicity stunt or a score for gender equality, but however you choose to look at it, there’s no stopping what’s being seen as a history making moment in the NFL. A woman will be participating in this year’s Regional Combine!
28-year-old Lauren Silberman admits she doesn’t have any recent kicking experience on her resume although she was a soccer player at the University of Wisconsin. And in a recent interview, her dad told reporters that Silberman successfully kicked a 40-yard field goal. Needless to say, her qualifications to play in the NFL are a little thin.
Meanwhile, that sound you just heard was douchebags exploding all across the U.S.A. That’s because for many, Silberman’s attempts to play in the NFL are making a mockery of the process and perhaps squeezing out a male player with much more experience. It’s a valid concern but it’s certainly not worth all the vitriol being spewed her way on the internet in light of the announcement. Some have gone as far as to actually wish Silberman makes a team and gets hurt trying to block a kickoff returner.
Here’s the thing: if she’s that good of a kicker, which she’ll have to prove, there shouldn’t be any more pressure on her than any other kicker to take down a 200+ lb speeding bullet flying toward the end zone. I mean, let’s keep it real and acknowledge all the half-assed tackles we see from kickers currently in the league. And let’s remember that this is a REGIONAL combine. That means these folks weren’t good enough to be invited to the National combine, they have to earn a spot there, so the pool of kickers probably isn’t that stellar to begin with.
With that said, I have mixed feelings about the NFL going co-ed. On one hand, I feel like if a woman CAN play, let her play. On the other hand, I can see how it could affect a certain level of intensity in the game because who wants to see a woman get manhandled by a linebacker…well, other than Chris Brown. It’s a tough call. If anything, maybe women can get a league of their own that isn’t quite as misogynistic as the Lingerie League, although there’s a good chance it would be just a notch above the ratings disaster that is the WNBA.
Perhaps I should stop getting ahead of myself and acknowledge that one chick trying out for the NFL is really not that big of a deal because it’s just a freaking try out!! Yeah, that makes MUCH more sense. In the meantime, check out Lauren’s side of the story in a recent interview with NFL Network.
