While starters for both teams stayed on the sidelines, the 2nd and 3rd string teams were left to battle it out in this Preseason finale.
With roster cuts due August 31st at 6:00pm, this was the chance for players in the balance to make one final impression and hopefully make the 53-man team. This is very important for the players, but for the fans (myself more specifically), nothing could be more uneventful. However, there were some points worthy of discussion…
In the first play of the game, starting cornerback Tramon Williams intercepted a pass thrown by Chase Daniels. Williams was held out for the entire preseason due to a bruised bone. I am hoping that this play is a sign that he will come to this season ready and willing to help revitalize the defense.
Also, 7th year Kicker Mason Crosby seems to have managed to keep his job amongst an intense position battle throughout Training Camp. Kickers Giorgio Tavecchio and Zach Ramirez were both cut this past week. While Crosby has been known to be somewhat undependable, he made both 48 and 45-yard field goals in Kansas City.
Vince Young took a majority of the snaps as the Backup Quarterback. As I’ve said before, I like his ability to run when needed but he has to make wiser decisions and not take so many hits. BJ Coleman made a brief appearance after Young and then returned to the bench. With cuts only days away, that is definitely not a good sign.
I have also been consistently impressed with Defensive Tackle Johnny Jolly’s performance throughout preseason. Every game, he delivers an explosive play and I believe that he has definitely earned a spot on the team.
Special team backups Jeremy Ross (Wide Receiver) and Micah Hyde (Cornerback) were also very effective. I personally think that Ross is the better punt returner but Hyde has other strengths as well. I think that they have both worked hard during camp and will hopefully have the opportunity to continue that work throughout the season.
So while this game had less excitement than an intense game of scrabble, the Packers emerged injury free. With the season opener in 8 days, that’s all I can ask for.
Update: According to his Twitter (@VinceYoung), the Packers released him today (8/31).
Next Game: Green Bay at San Francisco- 9/8 (3:25pm)
