From Bengals to Bye: Packers Recover From Week 4

Green Bay Packers Tight End Jermichael Finley after being hit by Bengals Safety George Iloka.

When a kiddie pool has more depth than your active roster, it’s time for a bye week.

My beloved Packers were dropping like flies Sunday as we handed a gift-wrapped victory to the Cincinatti Bengals.  It began with a seemingly accidental yet powerful blow to Jermichael Finley by Bengals Safety George Iloka…then an injured knee on James Starks (who was starting as a backup to previously injured running back Eddie Lacy). Rookie Johnathan Franklin replaced Starks and rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries in his first regular season NFL appearance. Impressive.  But with four minutes left in the the fourth quarter and the game on the line, Franklin fumbled. The fumble and subsequent touchdown gave the Bengals the lead.

And as easy as it is to do(many Packer fans did), I cannot solely blame Franklin for the loss. I mean, I can…but I won’t. He made one mistake but we can’t forget the many others made throughout the game by the team as a whole. In a first half packed with turnovers and takeaways, the Packers only put 13 points on the board. They were 4-13 in 3rd down efficiency. Aaron Rodgers was intercepted twice and sacked 4 times for a loss of 27 yards. They were 2-4 in the red zone. The dismal stats go on, but I’ll put you out of your misery.

My point is this: when you add up our missed opportunities, subtract the offensive line (since I couldn’t find them all game anyway),divide by the number of injured players, carry the one…yeah, they didn’t really deserve to win. Sloppy performance doesn’t win games. Simple as that.

So enjoy your week and rest up Pack. 1-2 isn’t the easiest of slumps to work your way out of, but I have faith that we will do just that.
