NFL Sunday Mourning

It’s been three weeks since the Saints won the Super Bowl but this past Sunday was the first Sunday I found myself feeling that sense of emptiness. Oh you know what I’m talking about football fans. It’s the feeling you get when it all hits home…the football season is over. Sundays are no longer about following fantasy players and cheering on the home team while enjoying a drunken beer-fest with friends. Now, the beer-fests remain but it’s just not the same when there’s a Lifetime movie on in the background.

R.I.P. No. 93

csI really think HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is one of the best shows on TV. But last week was a little difficult to watch.

Nick Schuyler gave his first in-depth interview about the boating accident earlier this year that involved he and three other football players. One was Marquis Cooper of the Oakland Raiders, and the other was Corey Smith, who played with the Lions for the last 3 seasons. Schuyler was the only survivor, and he details the whole horriffic story, including how the others died.

The Wait is Over

lionsSo I know you’re waiting on news from The Team With The Most to Prove.
…Uh, I’ve been waiting too.
Fortunately for us all, the team reports to HQ today and the first day of training camp 09 is set to commence Saturday morning. Just in time, the team announced that rookie WR Derrick Williams out of Penn State sigend a three-year deal. And the team’s new fav pet, (seriously, they loooove this guy) second-round pick S Louis Delmas signed a four year deal.
Personally, I’m looking for big things from hotties stellar athletes WR Calvin Johnson, DE Cliff Avril and…(not as hot but extremely talented) RB Kevin Smith.
But let’s take a second to revisit those who have perished in the offseason:

Preseason Rankings: At Least We’re Not 32?

Rebuilding.

It’s kind of a nice word on the surface. Like, oh, there was this awesome building that fell into a bit of disrepair, but now they’re rebuilding it, and it will be better than ever! There will be new carpeting, and an atrium in the lobby, and the entire electrical system will run off of solar panels!

Sounds great, right? But that’s only true if the new carpeting isn’t orange shag, the atrium isn’t cavernous and noisy, and the lights work even when the sun isn’t shining.

The Saints in ‘09: Dare to Dream

What’s more frustrating than supporting a football team that can’t put points on the board? Try supporting a team that leads the league in offense, averaging nearly 30 points a game, and yet still can’t manage to make the playoffs. That’s the kick to the gut reality of the 2008 New Orleans Saints.

Last season, our offense clicked on all…well most cylinders. (Lest we forget the repeated failure to convert on those dreaded 3rd and shorts.) But even with the injuries to key players like Marques Colston and Reggie Bush, other players like Lance Moore and Pierre Thomas stepped up to fill the offensive gaps. As for Drew Brees, he played like the MVP-caliber quarterback we’ve come to know and love. But that defense…oh the dreaded defense.
