Chicks Taking Charge: The Chick Who Made Payton “Play it Forward”
We’ll get to that night in a moment. But first, we want you to meet and understand this lady from the Lone Star state. Karen Hegner, pictured above (left) with Sean’s wife Beth, is the essence of all things southern. She’s got charm, smarts, wit, and balls. That’s right, a chick with balls…but not in the RuPaul kind of way. She’s got the kind of balls it takes to start up a non-profit and grow it into a hugely successful welfare to work organization called Crossroads Housing. She’s got the kind of balls it takes to approach the almighty Dallas Cowboys and convince them to sponsor her organization. And she’s got the kind of balls it takes to push a man like Sean Payton to change the culture of a city through his work off the football field.
Another Reason to Heart Sean Payton
As if drafting Sedrick Ellis and releasing Olindo Mare weren’t enough, Sean Payton’s given us yet another reason to put that whole “double reverse debacle” in the Tampa Bay game behind us.
On Monday, the Saints head coach held a news conference in New Orleans to announce his newly formed foundation: “Play it Forward.” Think of it as “Oprah’s Big Give” meets the NFL meets “K-ville,” minus the gumbo party of course.

Playoffs, schmayoffs! Why should New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton care about his team’s failure to make a Super Bowl run when he can still spend his postseason helping other teams get to the big game?
The Coach will step in as an analyst for the NFL Network starting today. He’ll appear on Point After this afternoon, then on Playbook for the rest of the week. Payton’s job is to break down what each team needs to do in the upcoming NFC and AFC Championship games to get to the Super Bowl. Does this reek of irony, or is it just us?
