The Final Episode of 4th and Long a Real Tearjerker
In the final episode of 4th and Long, there were four players remaining –Eddie Moten, Ahmaad Smith, Jesse Holley and Andrew Hawkins.
In previous episodes, former players made appearances and offered their wisdom. But, in the final episode, it was none other than Terrance Newman who showed up. And, he didn’t disappoint. His words of wisdom were just as meaningful.
He said “It’s not just you. You’ve got a whole lot of people counting on you,” at which point, he turned toward the camera and pointed at me and said “Like Jennifer a/k/a CowboysChick. When you play for the Cowboys, you do not want to disappoint THIS GIRL!”
One Flew Over the Cowboys’ Nest
In the last two episodes of 4th and Long, I couldn’t help but notice a strange psychological undercurrent. Maybe it’s just me or maybe it began with Daryl “Moose” Johnston’s guest appearance early in the July 6th episode where he said that football was a sport played by big, physical men but that it’s “all mental.”
That was followed by Coach Avezzano saying, quite condescendingly, that the Cowboys are going to balk at who they send from the reality show. Uh, Coach, you mean the reality show you work for? Ment-al!
The Comeback Kid!…at least that’s the ending I would have written
They’re baaaack! In last week’s episode of 4th and Long, the five previously cut players returned. They played against the remaining contestants for a chance to get back on the roster. And, well, you couldn’t help but root for them. Some of the particularly poignant moments were –
- When Stephen Andrews from the College of New Jersey puked his guts up after a vicious turn on the treadmill against the “home” team. My first reaction was EWWW (I am still a girl, after all). But, when he got back on the treadmill to win the chance to get the ball at the start of the 1st and 3rd quarters (no coin toss) for the “rival” team, I have never been so proud to be from New Jersey. Go, Stephen Andrews! Miles Austin and I are proud of you!
It’s 4th and Loooonnnng … But the Legends are Interesting
In the most recent episode of Michael Irvin’s reality show 4th and Long on SpikeTV, there were eight hopefuls remaining – 4 DB’s and 4 WR’s.
There were also the typical reality show hijinks. Waking the contestants up before dawn, driving them to Irving, Texas and making them run 8.5 miles back to the CottonBowl. Followed, of course, by a stern talk from Irvin in the bleachers. “You gotta step it up…This where you’ll be watching every other football game for the rest of your life.”
Yada, Yada. Yawn, Yawn.

When I meet Marion Barber…not if, but WHEN…I know he’ll be a perfect gentleman. He’ll sign my program or football or forearm. He’ll pose for pictures. He’ll smell really good and smile a lot. He’ll probably tell me I’m really pretty. (Stop laughing). Don’t ask me how I know. I JUST KNOW this is how it will be.
