Saints Fans Agree: 1-4 Never Felt So Good

brees record

Never in my million years as a Saints fan did I ever imagine I'd tear up watching my team win a regular season game. But last night, as the clock ticked down to zero and the Saints' defense surprisingly came through against the Chargers, I could feel something strange happening. I was actually getting misty eyed off of a week 5 win. That's just how much getting off the snide meant to this fan. It felt so damn good. Sure it helped that earlier that night, Drew Brees broke Johnny Unitas' half-century old record of 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass. Sure it helped that for the first time in forever, I got to see my Coach Sean Payton willing his team to victory. But what really … [Read more...]

First Female NFL Ref, But Hold Your Applause?

Shannon Eastin

This Thursday, Chicks like us should relish the opportunity to hold our heads high. For the first time in NFL history, a woman will referee a preseason game. Her name is Shannon Eastin. And while female fans should be clinking their glasses of Pinot over the fact that this ridiculous glass ceiling has finally been broken, it's just not that simple. What you may not have heard is that NFL refs are pulling a page from their player brethren and staging a lockout. The labor fight has been going on since June. Since the regular refs have no intentions of crossing the picket line, the league is letting folks who have only served as referees for high school and even small college games get … [Read more...]

RIP Junior Seau

When I was just a young girl living in New Orleans, trying to figure out why the team I loved sucked so bad and growing to love and understand the game of football, I can remember attaching myself to players on teams other than my beloved Saints. Sure I admired the Joe Montanas, Dan Marinos and Emmit Smiths of the league. But then, there were players like the Steelers' Rod Woodson and of course...Chargers linebacker Junior Seau. There was no reason for me to know who Junior Seau was. It's not like there was a reason for anyone on the Chargers' team to be on my radar back then. The Saints hardly ever played the Chargers. The Chargers weren't exactly "America's team." And while Junior … [Read more...]

The Super Bowl Is More Important Than…

...apparently a whole mess of stuff, according to the average American. And I thought it was just me and my fellow chicks who suffered from an odd, unhealthy obsession with the game. But nope, it turns out the rest of you are a bunch of weirdos, too! Hooray!! According to a survey run by CouponCabin.com (I know, I know...but just hear me out), 20% of people said they would miss a loved one's funeral if their favorite team was in the game. (Say what?!!!) 21% would miss an important work responsibility and 20 percent would miss the wedding of a close friend. (If someone cares so little about the Super Bowl that they would plan their wedding on game day, are they really worth being friends … [Read more...]

Why the Pro Bowl is the Golden Globes of Sports

pro bowl

The Golden Globes nominations for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp last year for The Tourist were pretty much the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's way of saying it, "F*ck it. We're not faking it anymore. We just want stars to show up." This year, the names changed but the trend remained the same. I mean c'mon, Glee and New Girl get nods but no love for shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, or Louie? The Globes' process consistently reeks of a popularity contest and some NFL fans might agree that some of the more recent Pro Bowl picks in high profile categories have the same stomach-turning stench. Take for example this year's QB picks. The top quarterbacks in the NFC and … [Read more...]
